Hey mom

I'm super happy and excited to hear about and see little Ames! He's so cute! I'm happy that everything worked out alright with him. It's weird to think of Jonathan as being dad now but he'll be a good one. I watched the videos that you attached as well and I can tell that he is really happy.

One more week until transfers. We'll see what happens. I have no idea what'll happen. I'm already here 3 transfers, 1 more would be 6 months in this area.

Elder Bolognini and I continue to get along well and we're visiting more investigators with members which has been cool. It's been a lot easier to visit and teach and follow up and sometimes get some nice snacks too :)

I've started reading lately the Old Testament but with the manual for student...for institute? I don't remember but it's really cool. I was reading another manual but it was more like the milk of the gospel and this other one I'm reading is more like the meat of the gospel. It has a lot more teaching and doctrine and knowledge that I've enjoyed reading. For example, before the mission, I always liked the idea of evolution. That man came from a common ancestor of the monkey. But something that I've learned in the last weeks and yesterday when I was reading is that this is impossible and that man did not come this way. I really liked it because it even had mathematical probability of what evolution would require and it was like 10^160 to one that it wouldn't work out. I like math. So yeah, evolution in the sense that man came from smaller beings is a lie. Creation is the truth. There is however changes that sometimes are made between species when the environment changes then the weaker die off. But this isn't evolution, this is just change, adaptation.

How was your week?

We went to the temple this week in Campinas! That was very nice to be able to go to the temple again. It was different this time as well and that was fun to see the change. I also bought a bunch of stuff there, 42 reais of stuff. A bunch of garments and a giant book of Mormon and 3 preach my gospels and 2 triple-combinations. All the books I bought to give to people.

After the session in the temple, we were in the celestial room and everyone was leaving but I stayed. In the end, I was the only one in the room and it was nice to be alone in there. I could really feel close to the presence of Heavenly Father in that room. That was a nice special experience for me

Do you still exercise every morning?

I should, but I've been slacking lately. I need to get back on it.

Where is E Bolognini from?

He's from Espírito Santo which in English would be Holy Ghost. It's about 7 hours of travel from here by bus. It's just north of Rio de Janeiro

After living in Brazil for more than a year now, what things about America do you appreciate that you maybe didn’t realize were important to you before you went on your mission?

Well I think that's about it. I'm happy :) The time is passing really fast. Yesterday was the 1st of October. The day before yesterday was my birthday and it's almost Christmas...but there's still a lot of time left. I'm happy to be a missionary and happy for the opportunity I have to bring happiness to God's children and thus to Him. I'm grateful for you guys (mom and dad) and my brothers and sisters as well for being good examples to me. You guys are awesome.

Once again mom, I like that you're easy going. I was reading about when you guys walked in the rain and I thought 'man, there are some woman that wouldn't have done that so I'm happy that you're not one of those people. I'm gonna look for a wife that's easy going like you.

I laughed a lot with the picture of dad hiding behind the bush and your invite to find dad haha I found it very funny that he was just standing there not even really trying to hide but still "hidden"

I'm happy to see that you guys had a good week and got to relax a bit and have a good time. I enjoyed reading your letter

They had elections here. President Dilma (a woman) will continue as president. She's similar to Barack Obama in a lot of ways.

This last week we ate mocotó which is cow hand!....Elder Bolognini said he had a "weak stomach" and couldn't eat things with a lot of fat. Meanwhile Elder Gilliat, Elder Elias (The other Brazilian) and I struggled to eat one or 2 pieces of cow hand....but you can't tell the sister that you don't like her food you just gotta eat it and smile and thank her for the food.

How was your week?

We've started working with one of the young woman in our branch. We were at her house eating lunch and then there came 2 of her friends and we started to talk with them and she gave the 2 of them books of mormon and we started to teach a bit. Since that first day, 1 more young man has become involved. Of the 3, 2 of them are "atheist" and the other one is normal evangelical. Richard, one of the atheists, went to church yesterday and we invited him to pray to know if God exists and so he had been doing that and at church he said that when he prayed that he felt a calm feeling, an interior peace. So I believe that he is starting to believe now and we're trying to help him to be baptized here in 2 weeks. The awesome thing is that every time we meet them we're with Natali (the young woman from the branch) so she's helping out a lot and being a great friend.

Other than that, the week was good, we got some good things done. The Integration night was cool this week, we folded a piece of paper a couple times and then tore it in one direction and only time and what was left was a cross and the word "love" which was pretty cool.

Elder Bolognini and I are getting along well. He's teaching me a lot about how to be a better missionary. He's very excited and he helps people feel special and he also has a good amount of knowledge about other religions and he knows how to make people have doubts and then take away those doubts with the gospel. That's what I'm trying to learn with him. And I believe he's being a bit more obedient with me than he would be if he was other people. Bit by bit he's getting better.

If you could change one thing about your mission (or the mission), what would it be?

Change one thing? I would choose to go back in time and start from the beginning with the knowledge and experience that I have now because in the beginning I wasn't the best I could be (not because I chose not to be but just because I didn't know)

How have your priorities changed (if they have…) since being on a mission?

Man there are a lot of things that have changed since I've been on the mission but to name them is difficult...My priorities have shifted more to the welfare of others than my own. I worry more about other people. What I want in my future wife has also changed. 

Is the weather still getting hot??  I’m surprised that it’s so hot already – you mentioned something about that in an earlier email.

Yeah it got pretty dang hot but it's cooled off a bit now. Yesterday it rained even! They say it needs to rain for 2 or 3 years to replenish the dam rain deposits

Well I think that's about it. I'm happy to hear about your week and the cruise and the church. Continue to help others and think more about what Christ would do, you guys are good example to me and I'm sure you are to others as well :)

I'm happy you guys are not leaving beneath your privileges on the cruise ship like that one man that President Uchtdorf described that just stayed in his cabin the whole trip eating beans haha that would suck.

I forgot to tell you but that last week, I made cookies! I still have batter that's uncooked that I need to cook up...I didn't cook it all because the first 2 batches I did, got burned on bottom and so I was sad and didn't want to burn all of them but now I know what I did wrong. The first batch, I forgot to put butter on the pan (they don't have nonstick spray here :(  ) And the first and second batch, I set the oven for 250 degrees thinking "well mom's instructions say 375 and 250 is the maximum so that'll have to do I guess" Buttt I forgot that it was celsius! So it was really like 500 degrees farenheit.

There's a little boy that has like 2 years that he calls me "Elder" And the other elders "Other Elder" That's kind of funny and cute isn't it?

Elder Gilliat and Elder Elias had an idea about how to work with the branch and were implementing it yesterday at church and it was funny because one of the brothers said "Wow that Elder Horton sure is smart!" Giving me the credit for the idea and Elder Gilliat was like "Wait, what??" haha

How was your week?

The week was good, there was an emergency transfer! Surprise! I stayed in Pinda and Elder Bolognini (don't pronounce the "g") came here. Elder Rivera went to another area. he was sad to leave and a bit angry in the beginning (Which is actually kind of funny because when he stayed, he was angry that he stayed and when he left, he was angry) He actually cried too when he left. But he's a good elder. We liked our time together and we were good friends in the end. We traded ties and he gave me La Biblia y el Libro de Mormón so that was cool.

Elder Bolognini has more time on the mission than me, only 4 more months until he goes home. He was district leader before the emergency transfer but now he's with me as junior. He's a really good missionary, he teaches very well and he has a lot of knowledge of the scriptures and of other religions. When he works, he works very well, but his problem is that he doesn't always work but the good thing is that he does what I tell him too and so he hasn't not worked with me. He doesn't obey all the rules either but that's why President put him with me in my district so that we could help him. I'm not like forcing him to be obedient, for now, I'm just being cool about it and we have a really good relationship and companionship because of it even though we've only got a week together. Later, I'll try and encourage him to be more obedient and to do some other things but I'll never fight with him because discord is of the Devil 3 Nephi 11:29

We played hide and seek yesterday at night which was pretty fun. We put blankets up in all the windows and it was almost pitch black.

Who are you teaching?

Nicholas, a young man of 17 years who's gone to church like 5 times who had a lot of friendship with Elder Rivera who could be baptized any day, he just needs an answer.

Carlinho, Geralda, and João Vitor they're kind of progressing but have been to church a couple of times

We've been meeting a lot of less active members as well and trying to get them to come back to church and try teach and baptize their unbaptized family members.

How is your district doing?

The district is doing well. We have some good people that have some real potential that we're preparing to be baptized

What do you look forward to each day?

I always love studying and teaching investigators

Sunday and church and seeing my investigators at church

Have you had anything different/interesting to eat lately?

Cow stomach! It's not half bad actually, the first plate is kind of good but the second plate is a bit more gross and forced.

How much do you think you walk each day in this area?

Depending on the day, about 90 minutes or so. Sometimes only 60 sometimes up to 120. We're trying to walk less and be in houses more because of the heat...its been in the hundreds here recently.

Have you learned any hymns on your guitar?

I still haven't had the time on the internet to find something to help me learn but I found a cool guy who plays some cool music who teaches how to do it as well but I haven't had time to watch the lesson yet.

Yep well that's about it. I'm happy and my testimony about obedience really has grown a lot in the last days. I really know that obedience to the laws of God isn't just a suggestion or a good idea, but it's really something that will help us and protect us in that moment and in the future. And with every act of obedience, there is a blessing connected to that act of obedience which is gained or lost according to our obedience.

Hey family,

Man...I got caught up in time today, I was doing stuff and the time just went away.

We had 3 investigators at church. Elder Gilliat and Elder Elias left to find more people to come to church and they came back "empty handed" But later, one of the people that they had talked with came back to the church saying that they were interested and wanted to know when the meetings were! They're really cool

We've started to read the Book of Mormon as a mission which is cool because I know that the other Elders are reading the exact same thing that I am and so we can share experiences and what we learned and what not.

Me and my companion are doing a lot better. Recently I've been learning more Spanish with him and so that's been a good reason for us to laugh and to talk together.

The Branch of Pindamonhongaba is growing and maybe by the New Year, it will be a ward!

What have you learned about people or about yourself as you have seen people have something wonderful like the gospel in their grasp, but they let it slip away?

That's one of the saddest things that a missionary has to deal with because we love the people so much and we know how much joy and happiness this message will bring them so it's really saddening when they don't accept the message or the church.

I learned something about prayer this past week. It's something that actually happened to me when I was little but that I didn't recognize the doctrine contained until now. I was praying once when I was like 10 or so and I was curious of God really was hearing my prayer and so I asked "Can you hear me?" And I didn't feel anything and I asked myself, "Is it really true, does he really hear prayers? What do I think?" And I answered myself "Well....I believe he does." It was only after I decided for myself that He really does hear our prayers that I felt something different in me. Something really special, a confirmation by the Holy Ghost. I believe that my first testimony was about prayer and from that, I gained a testimony about many other things by the same principle which is written in Ether 12:6. First is the faith, then the test, and then the testimony.

Family!

Hey mom guess what, the wife of the branch president said to me yesterday that you prepared me well for my mission :) So congratulations! I've also shown your picture to seem people and they're like "wow she's pretty!" So that's a job well done and you can feel even better about yourself today :) best mom in the world!

I found out today that one of my converts, Bruna, will be serving a mission! She put in her papers yesterday and here in a month she'll know where she's going! I'm super excited!

Maybe you can use your hymn playing to bring the Spirit when you teach?  Is that allowed?

I don't see why not, there's no rule against it. I'm gonna learn some church music now that I have a guitar

Did you get to watch conference and if so, what were some of your favorite messages?

Yeah I watched all of it, my time is short so I won't talk a lot but I learned some principles and techniques about being a leader, I learned better ways to be a missionary and to serve others.

How was your week and how are the missionaries in your district?

The week was cool, we started to work in Pinda instead of just in Moreira Cesar which is really far from the church and we've had some successes already! We brought a less active family back to church this Sunday and they really liked it and so I'm happy :) The district continues to improve including my companion

Looking back over your mission so far, what have you learned about yourself that you didn’t know before the mission?

I've learned that I wasn't as patient or humble as I thought I was but I've improved in those areas. I've really become more focused on the Lord's work. Before, I just went to church and seminary and sat there without really worrying about anyone else other than me but now I'm able to see things a bit more as God sees them and how He cares for His children and I'm motivated with the desire to help them. I've also come to recognize some gifts that I have as I've put my shoulder to the wheel of God's work and glory. That was a good question, a thought provoker.

Well, my times basically up. It’s not the biggest letter I've sent but I've seen the letters of other missionaries and they're a lot shorter soooo yeah. I also forgot to look in my journal to get some highlights of the past week and I can't think of anything right now so yep that it.

Hey family

How was your week?

At transfers, I saw my son (Elder Mikulecky) my grandson (Elder Clive) my brother (Elder Buhler) And my nephew (I didn't see his name) That was cool. My son speaks really well.

I had the snakiest lesson of my mission this last week. And at the same time 6 new investigators who are young women. Their dual investigators. Investigating the church and us a bit too haha

I got a guitar from an elder that left the zone and didn't want to bring the guitar with him so now I can play at will :) I'm gonna learn some church hymns

We decided this past week that we wouldn't return with Books of Mormon in our bags so we've started to just turn them in to random people with a small explication and it's been kinda fun to do that :)

We also did an integration night with the Book of Mormon where we should part of "The Testaments" And some explications about the Book of Mormon and then we did some practices of turning in the Book of Mormon that were fun and then we gave every member a Book of Mormon to turn in to someone.

Tell me about your conference plans for this weekend.

I'm not exactly sure, I think we'll be able to watch the sessions as long as we have investigators there.

What makes you feel happy?

Seeing the branch/ward progress, pizza, açãí, having time to mess with excel (which I don't have lately :(   )

What is your morning routine?

Wake up, exercise, bath, eat, study. Pretty normal.

Tell me about some of the missionaries you enjoy being with/learning from.

Elder Campbell is awesome, almost my height and a great missionary and leader, he's Zone Leader now.  Elder Gilliat, and Elder Elias as well.

What are some blessings you’ve received lately?

I've received the blessing of Elder Rivera having recognized that he can decide what attitude he wants to take and having decided to take the right attitude and be my friend.

Where do you get your hair cut?

When there's a sister that cuts here, I cut it with her usually but if not, there are a good amount of hair cutters so I just cut it anywhere.

Have you been sick at all?

No, I thought I was starting to get sick but I didn't so yay!

Is it starting to get warmer?  What would you compare your winter to – Augusta??  Greenville??  Provo??

Yes unfortunately :/ winter compared to...warmer than Augusta winter, and maybe also a good comparison could be a bit colder than a Provo summer. This winter almost didn't exist...man it's had some pretty hot periods even in the middle of winter.

How big is your branch?

It has a weekly attendance of about 85 people. We’re getting ready to turn into a ward! Or to divide into 2 branches.

How was your week?

The week was good, we moved our house and our new house which is super awesome! It has hot water even at the kitchen sink! The shower is like a small dam of water, it has a super nice view. It’s clean.  That was a day and half of effort. Then we had general conference which was cool. 

·         We all have an umbrella. It’s a spiritual umbrella. It's raining. But we decide whether or not we want to use the umbrella to keep dry. The umbrella is things like the scriptures, going to church, prayer, listening to the living prophet.

·         "Organize yourselves, go hungry, but pay your tithing"

·         Sermons without the invite to action is like water that doesn't take away thirst

·         Be insubstituble in the workplace

·         Parents and leaders need to help their children and followers to recognize their responsibilities and do them without doing it for them.

Elder Gilliat, who was in my MTC district and who is in my current district, will be training this transfer! He's pretty excited about that and I'm happy for him.

I'm happy that I have the chance to stay in Pinda and continue to help. I feel like I'm making a difference.

I'm not really sure what else to say...I'll try and send some pictures.

Sooo...it's kind of a short letter but I think I'm gonna close it up. I got like 10 other things I wanna do too so yep The church is true!

Hey mom!

Interesting comment made by Alexandre, one of President Celio's counselors in the branch. He said that when I get back home that I'll be a good ward mission leader because I'm good at incentivizing and making people excited and that when I get on the pulpit, I don't just talk but 'exult' the members. He said that for this reason, he likes me. That's always nice to hear, it made me happy

Me and my companion are doing well, always getting better!

one of the sisters, in her farewell testimony (just one more week) said that she had a dream in the which she was in the pre-existence and even saw some of the missionaries in our zone there with her. She said that there was like a final feast before we entered this world as babies and that at this feast, there was like healthy, good food but simple food and that everyone had received all the lessons and the trainings necessary to enter this world and she said that she saw this group of people, and also another group of people that were eating unhealthy things that were kind of slouched in their chairs, kind of lazy. She said that the first group was also dressed in armor and had swords and shields and she even said that she saw our current zone leader there and that he was the leader of that group and that was a great leader before and is a great leader now. When she told us all that I was kind of surprised, it's interesting, I thought I'd share this story with you guys.

How was your week? 

It was good, we found some cool new people to teach that invited us for some Brasilean churrasco this week! THat's what I'm talking about! We also had one investigator at church, Nicholas. It was his second time. He's a cool young guy (16 years), we'll see what happens with him.

This past week, we did a division/splits with the zone leader and that was cool. I stayed with the zone leader and Elder Rivera stayed with the ZL's companion. I learned a good amount of stuff with him. It was interesting too because we were studying together like normal and he told me that when he got in the mission, he wanted to baptize 500 at the end of his mission but has not even come close to that. I asked "Well what's necessary to baptize 500?" I thought that maybe the answer was public preaching like in olden times. He then told me a story about missionaries who, a long time ago, gave books of mormon to book stories and any place that would sell the books and put up like advertisements and then a Lot of people just started reading the book and then ended up calling the missionaries saying "I've read the book of mormon and I want to be baptized in the true church of God"  and I thought that was awesome and you guys know me, I like big ideas. So we're started to talk about how we would do something like that. We've got a rough plan but we need to talk with President Andrew about it. I was gonna talk with him today about it but he left early :( but that's okay, I'll just call him later. We'll see what happens with this

What interactions have you had with your new president?

We got to know him today! He told us about his life story and that was nice, their lives are full of service. He and his wife speak portuguese really well. 

Did I tell you Jacquelyn got her mission call to Sophia Bulgaria?

Yep you did, she also sent me a personal email letting me know too

Dad, I hope you get feeling better soon, I know it's tough working and doing everything when you're not feeling well.

9-9-14 I'm a Grandpa!

Hey family!

Sorry I didn't have time to respond yesterday, we had our zone meeting in the morning and then zone p-day and then a family night at night with some less actives which was very good and also it was a holiday so the usual lan-house was closed. but I'm on now!

Tercio and his friend that gave us the referral and his friend's entire family (who is actually from Taubaté so it was cool to see all of them again :) One of the young men said that he liked it when I was there and that I stayed there for very little time. It's good to feel missed)

I'm a grandpa!!  E Mikulecky is a trainer now!

Dad, one of my favorite scriptures about obedience is Mosiah 2:41 and it talks very clearly about the blessings. With youth, obedience to the commandments can be a bit hard, it’s true, but I know that you'll find a good way to help them understand why they should be obedient.

"Dad and I were going to go to San Antonio on Friday and spend the night and see the Alamo and the Riverwalk, and then go to the game on Saturday, but Dad hasn’t been feeling well all week and we thought it would be better to do the minimum.  I think it was a good call"

That reminded me of a talk that I'd heard recently by President Eyring in the General Conference talk a year ago in October in 2013 when he was talking about his parents and how they were very different and how his dad Loved Chemistry and his mom loved art and what not and that sometimes he forgot things that were important to her. Elder Eyring said something like "it would've been better if the Holy Ghost had reminded him of his promise to his wife made years ago but at least he let the Holy Ghost soften his heart so that the decision to fulfill her promise was his and that it wasn't a sacrifice to him" What you said in your letter reminded me of that talk and I'm just really grateful that have such good parents that have such a good relationship and that love each other so much that they are practically one in their desires and wishes and sacrifices that would've been very difficult become easy for you guys. so Thanks :) You guys are well on your way for a very successful celestial marriage and partnership with even greater responsibilities. You guys are good examples for me.

Do you remember the Zirkles?  They’re going on a mission to San Antonio Texas!  Also, their daughter, Kelsey, is returning from her mission soon.  I think right before they leave for their mission!  Their son, Tanner, is in Paris on his mission too.

I did, thank you, that helped me a lot to get my focus again. It's interesting too because we read the same list from preach my gospel yesterday in the zone meeting.

How was your week?

The week was cool, I liked it. Leoson, our ward mission leader, said that the air in the branch is changing for the better. and Alexandre, the second counselor, said that he's seeing a positive influence in the attendence of members at church which we're also seeing. It's good to be part of a difference. With just 10 or so more people, our branch can turn into a ward.

Tercio was baptized this last week! It was really cool

I bought a silver ring to go on my ring finger! To fight off the snakes. I don't know if I ever told you guys, but once, a woman asked me to marry her and sooo it's a precaution. "Sorry, I'm engaged..." it was 2 reais, a little less than a dollar

Leoson, our branch mission leader. When I got here, the other elders were complaining about him, that he doesn't do anything and that he's good for nothing else but give car rides. Well that was true before I got here but I got to know him and I came to see that he had great desires and faith and a great testimony, he just needed some motivation and someone to follow up with him. So these weeks and months i've been following up with him and working with him and we've managed to have a missionary meeting every week which but I've always had to call him and confirm with him and he usually showed up late but this last sunday, he showed up on Time without me having to call him! So that's some solid progress for me and I'm happy :)

We got a reference from Leoson and we went there and while we were talking with her (Vilma), her cousin called and Vilma said she was with "the elders" and her cousin was like "from what church?"..."Oh that's my church! Let me talk to them" I talked with her cousin and she told me "Elder, I was praying a lot yesterday at night that God would help my cousin. You are an answer to my prayers. Help her" so that was interesting. We marked our next appointment and left a pamphlet and we'll visit her today, we'll see how it goes.

I had an interesting experience with my companion this last week. I was adjusting the wardrobe/closet and the bar that holds up the hangers fell. I went to put it back in place and it fell again and then Elder Rivera started to just laugh at me. I started to do it again, he continued to laugh. I found it very annoying. I was annoyed to the point where I took out his clothes and threw them on his bed and told him to do it himself and I put my clothes up on the bar and left. I wanted to be a bit alone so I left the apartment and walked outside like 5 steps and I was thinking. My first thoughts were of anger and being annoyed. "Why does he have to laugh at me. Does he not care about me? Does he not think I have feelings too? does he think I like getting laughed at?" But then I changed my thoughts "...why doesn't he care about me? Why doesn't he love me? Because I don't love him...what is love? Love is charity which is the pure love of Christ. What would Christ do? Well...he would go back, apologize and arrange his clothes in the closet again. Sooo with a prayer that's what I did. He was obviously annoyed too. He didn't accept my apology or my help but left the room. I decided to help anyways. I took out some of my clothes to give room for his and arranged all of his clothes in the closet and even made his bed and sweeped around it. Doing all that, we managed to continue normally throughout the day without having any bad feelings. When I was with Elder Cosme, I don't think I would've acted like this. I think I would've just stayed angry and fought with him some more. For this reason, I feel bad that I didn't do better with Elder Cosme and I wish I could go back and redo it...but at least I've learned from my mistakes and I'm getting better. I've learned now (it seems) to humble myself after the situation and to do what I need to to make it better...now I just need to learn to humble myself in and before the situation so that the bad feelings can be avoided altogether. Life really is a great learning process and it's all about just trying to become like Christ.

What kind of service did you give?

This last Saturday, we helped our branch mission leader to move his house and that was cool. I felt useful. I also helped destroy his cement path behind his new house which was a lot of fun :) This Saturday we're going to help another brother clean his yard....like with a hoe, take out the plants. Yards here are different.

Did anything funny happen to you recently?

We got a referral from some other missionaries. A member in their ward has a son in jail. This son was preaching the gospel in the prison and one of the other prisoners wanted his family to hear the same message. We got the information, went there. we clapped our hands at the gate and out came a person. I looked at the face...'I think it's a man' I looked at the body 'but it appears to be a woman?' the person spoke "Hi my name is Jessica" in a deep, gravely voice. 'ohhhhhhh crapppppp' he/she/it is a transvestite! I acted normally in the situation but man that was an awkward situation. I didn't know whether to say he or her. The person is also Macumbeiro....which is like voodoo or like black magic. Soooo we left a panphlet and said we'd try and return some other day to talk with another family member.

Did you get your spy pen order yet?

Yeah I did! I'm super excited too! Thanks for sending that! If all goes well, the money that I'll sell them for will go towards my Christmas money that you guys would’ve sent me so you guys won't need to send me anything for Christmas (not that I'll make a lot of profit but just because I'll sell it for about the same price that you guys spent buying it and sending it here.

Hey family!

This week was alright. Our numbers weren't that great and I was outside of my area for 2 days doing divisions/splits with the other companionship. We didn't have anyone at church which was also a bit sad but we did our weekly planning session and set some plans and goals to have a better week this week.

In the other area, when we were doing splits/divisions, we were knocking doors and we happened to knock on the door of a less active couple! I believe that it wasn't just coincidence. We talked with them and they were very welcoming and friendly. The woman had actually just returned from a trip to the US in Minnesota to visit her family! She doesn't speak English though...She said that they were baptized in São Paulo (in the capital) and then moved here to Pinda but that when they got here, they weren't very well received and the Branch President and the Relief Society President were gonna visit her but never did...so they became inactive for 8 years. But Saturday she entered into the church chapel for the first time in 8 years to participate in an English class that I and Elder Gilliat are teaching. She got to know some members of the church and so we're hoping that with some visits from some people, they'll come back to church.

The other elders also are preparing a man to be baptized this week, Tércio. He's very prepared. They taught him about fasting and fast offerings and then the next day, he did a fast and asked us "I'm fasting, how do I pay the fast offering?" He did that without them telling him to haha he's awesome. I'll probably interview him this Friday for his baptism.

Do you have a favorite memory of going to Edisto?

I liked going with the Fowers, because then I got to hang out with Chase. I don't have any single memory that stands out though..lots of holes...body surfing...sun burns and what not. It's all good memories.

So you’ve got a new mission president by now – tell me all about him and the transition and all.  I love the photo you sent of the last picture you had with him.  Is he from Houston??  You said something about running into him??  I think that would be a very frustrating way to end a mission!!

I don't think he's from Houston...buttt who knows if he'd pass by there.

So we do have a new president. President Don Leo Andrew and Sister Claudio Ann Andrew. They were serving in the Recife Temple and they were invited to serve as mission presidents here by the first presidency (which shows how far up this change went. The very prophet was thinking about this mission). We haven't really gotten to know them yet but we will get to know them.

You mentioned “mission conference” – was that a mission-wide gathering and meetings?  I’m assuming Pres Ferrin wasn’t there – tell me more about it.

Actually, President Ferrin Was there. It was a half of the mission that was there. President Ferrin wanted to have one last meeting before he left. He's gone by now.

How did the house building with Carlinho go yesterday?  I hope he was able to come to church today!  And Geralda too!!  Do they build houses there with wood like we do, or is it more stone like I remember some of the houses in Argentina?  Is he building the entire house, or just doing some of the work?  Hope it all went well!!

And so, yesterday we did a division or splits and so I stayed in the other area and my companion and another missionary tried to find his house to do the service. "Tried" because they went to the address that he passed to us and neither he nor the house was there..and then he didn't go to church yesterday and so I'm not really sure what to think about him right now. I'm also a bit less hopeful about him being baptized because he needs to get married and his wife isn't very open to us.

Houses here are similar to houses in Argentina I believe. A house made from wood is Very rare, I think I've seen one in my entire mission.

What news do you hear from family and friends and other missionaries??

I don't communicate with a lot of other people. Every now and then I'll talk with Sister Mady Spencer or my son in the mission but I usually just talk to you guys and mess with microsoft excel

I'm reading Doctrine and Covenants in my personal study and I never knew how much that D+C talks about missionary work! Like 70% of the sections talk about it. This really is the most important work and responsibility we have as members of the church. I remember a verse (I don't remember where right now) that says that before we should go back to our houses, we should proclaim the gospel on the way to the people we pass, our neighbors, friends and everyone.

Hey mom!

Dad, I enjoyed your story, I'm happy to hear that everything came out alright if you know what I mean *nudge, nudge*  And how's your sunday school class?

Man I'm gonna have aNother little one calling me tio (uncle) this week! That's awesome!

How was your week?

My week was good, Carlinho went to the church for the second time and it was a small miracle and very cool. We were at his house Saturday at night and we were teaching him about the restoration. He had already gone to church once without us even teaching him which was very cool as well. After he went to church, Elder Rivera and I decided that we'd stop teaching people and just invite them to come to church and then they'd all come. We were joking of course. But anyways, we were finishing up the lesson and we invited him and his mom (who was there) to be baptized. He accepted as did his mom (which honestly isn't that rare of a thing, the hard part is following through) and it was cool too because his mom was like "yeah, go there, get baptized!" haha and then we set them for a date (the 7th of September) and then the mom, Geralda, said that she was already baptized. We explained it to her and she understood it so well that she said she'd be baptized again if she felt that what we said was true. But then came the invite to come to church came and he said he would have to work on his house that he's building tomorrow. Elder Rivera and I were a bit sad but we told him of the importance of the day of the Lord and to not work on this day and we promised blessings and after about 5 minutes of talking, he said he'd go to church! He's a little timid but he has a good desire to follow Christ I believe. And tonight we're going to a family night with him and another member of the ward who lives very close and this Saturday we're going to be one of the Lord's "blessings" We're going to help him build his house with some other members of the church! I'm hopeful that we'll be able to help him to come unto Christ through His church. We have some barriers that we'll have to knock down first but it's possible. He's not married and his wife doesn't want to marry right now but I know that if we can help him.

Mission conference was cool, I learned about the importance of specific prayers and specific planning. And we're excited to apply other things that we learned as well. We'll see if it makes a big difference

Any news on your mission president yet?

It's for sure now, President Ferrin and his wife will be leaving us by the end of this week and the new president will be arriving. I told them to say hi if they see you guys in Houston.

Have you had your night of integration yet?  If so, how did it go?

Yeah we did! It was cool. Everyone seemed to have liked it. It was a good start. We'll be in charge again this week and we'll have the theme of the tree of life. But next week, and the week after, 2 other organizations have already volunteered to be responsible for those nights! That's awesome! I'm happy for this :) I was thinking. I may not baptize the most or be the best missionary in a lot of aspects but I can at least organize an activity and make it so that even when I leave, the activity will continue thus blessing the lives of many others. It's become a goal of mine, to set up integration nights and other such things in all the areas that I pass in.
